Ellen, Lowe's give Rockport-Fulton High School $1M gift to rebuild after Harvey

The Ellen Show surprises Rockport-Fulton High School with $1 million to help them rebuild after Hurricane Harvey.

ROCKPORT, Texas -- Nearly eight months have passed since Hurricane Harvey ripped through the Texas coast, leaving towns to pick up the pieces and rebuild.

That includes the city of Rockport and its only high school: Rockport-Fulton High School.

The school's gym, where the volleyball team and many other teams call home, was severely damaged during the storm.

On Monday, April 16, the school's volleyball team shared on the Ellen DeGeneres Show how they've helped keep not only the school's spirit alive but also the community spirit in the midst of all of the devastation.

A few of the school's volleyball players, Karys Hawkins and Allison Sanders, told Ellen that while they were devastated by the gym's destruction, the team still came together to help clean up the city. They also managed to play out their entire season, which they credit to the support from the surrounding schools.

And their hard work has not gone unrecognized.

Partnering with hardware store Lowe's, Ellen DeGeneres gave Rockport-Fulton High School one of the biggest gifts ever seen in the show's 15 seasons -- $1 million dollars to help rebuild the gym.

"I'm going to help…and my friends at Lowe’s support public schools in communities across the country with their Lowe’s Gives program. They want to use their Lowe’s Heroes to help rebuild your gym with their expertise. This is, it really is the biggest gift we’ve ever given. Today they’re committing one million dollars to this project. One million dollars from Lowe’s," DeGeneres said.
