Keller High School cancels pep rally, asks students not to walkout after threat

In an email sent to parents Thursday night, Keller ISD said it is working with local law enforcement to identify the 'source and validity of these threats.'

Acting on the report of a violent threat, Keller High School has cancelled a Friday pep rally and are urging students not to participate in a student-organized walkout.

In an email sent to parents Thursday night, Keller ISD said it is working with local law enforcement to identify the ‘source and validity of these threats.’

The district said it received a report of a violent act that could take place during the pep rally or walkout.

Students have been asked to stay in class.

Principal Dr. Michael Nasra said in the email: 'It is unfortunate that we have to take such steps, but providing a safe and secure learning environment is our first priority. We urge all parents and guardians to take this opportunity to discuss the seriousness of making any kind of statement – whether in person or on social media – that could be construed as terroristic in nature.’

Parents are urged to contact Keller ISD at 817-744-1400 with questions.

Full email to parents:

Dear Keller High School Parents and Guardians,

In Keller ISD, student safety is our top priority, and in an effort to keep you informed about events taking place at our campus, I wanted to address a report of a threat of violence that was made to our campus today. Keller High School received a report that violent act would take place either at Friday’s pep rally or during a student-organized walkout that was planned for Friday morning. As a result of this, Friday’s pep rally has been canceled, and we are asking students to remain in their classes and not participate in the walkout.

At this time, Keller ISD’s Safety and Security Department is working with local law enforcement to investigate the source and the validity of these threats, but out of regard for student safety, KISD administrators determined it was in the best interest of our students to cancel those events which were included in the threat. Additionally, increased security will be present on our campus Friday as a precautionary measure.

It is unfortunate that we have to take such steps, but providing a safe and secure learning environment is our first priority. We urge all parents and guardians to take this opportunity to discuss the seriousness of making any kind of statement – whether in person or on social media – that could be construed as terroristic in nature.

Thank you for your support of Keller High School. If you have any questions, please contact our office at 817-744-1400.

Sincerely,

Dr. Michael Nasra

Principal
