The two officers who fatally shot Stephon Clark last month are back on duty but will not be working in patrol capacity out of safety concerns, according to the Sacramento Police Department.

The two officers, whose names have not been officially released by the police department, were immediately placed on administrative leave after the fatal shooting on March 18. Police say they thought Stephon was holding a gun, but he was found with only a cellphone.

The return of the officers comes on the same day Stephon's brother, Stevante Clark, was arrested on several charges including criminal threats to another person and felony assault. Protesters also delivered 100,000 signatures to the Sacramento District Attorney's Office Thursday demanding the officers be charged.

The 22-year-old's death in his grandmother's backyard has sparked protests, heated City Council meetings and civil unrest in Sacramento, in addition to calls for justice nationally, particularly after the officers' body camera footage was released.

The district attorney said Wednesday it may be more than a year before she decides if the two police officers should face criminal charges.
