Fire marshal: 20 hurt, 1 missing after explosion at Pasadena plant

The company says flames and smoke may be visible in the area as emergency crews respond. The fire is no longer active, however.

PASADENA, Texas -- Kuraray America Eval confirms there was a fire and explosion at their facility in Pasadena on Saturday morning.

The Pasadena Fire Marshal tells KHOU 11 News there were 20 people hurt and one person is missing. The extent of the injuries is not yet known.

There is no shelter in place reported at this time, and the fire marshal says the fire is no longer active.

Kuraray's website says the plant specializes, chemical, fiber and resin production.

Here is their statement posted at about 11 a.m.:

"This is a message from Kuraray America Eval located at 11500 Bay Area Blvd Pasadena,TX 77507. At 10:27 on 5/19/2018, a(n) Explosion, Fire incident occurred at our facility. At this time, Emergency Vehicles, Flames, Odor, Smoke may be noticeable to the community. We are coordinating with local officials, and working to resolve the issue as soon as possible. Stay tuned to local officials for more information. Update will be provided on this site, when needed."

The City of Pasadena posted the following statement to its Faceook page:

"City of Pasadena Office of Emergency Management has received a level 3 notification from **Kuraray America Eval located at 11500 Bay Area Blvd.**There is no danger to the public at this time. ***Incident Description: A fire explosion happened in the EVAL Plant. Multiple people down. Emergency vehicles on their way. The city will continue to monitor the situation and advise you if you need. No shelter in place for residents at this time."
