Former American Idol contestant shares highs and lows of inaugural season on ABC

"Do I wish it was me on there?" she said, "Absolutely! I feel like I'd be killing it right now."

FRISCO, Texas -- Britney Holmes flipped on the lights in the studio that she and her fiancé built inside their Frisco home.

“This is my home studio, my social media setup,” she said, then set up her iPhone and started recording a stunning version of Mariah Carey’s, “You’ll Always be my Baby.” The song is what Holmes calls her “go-to” and she nailed it, but after performing on a stage as big as American Idol, the home studio feels a little small.

“Do I wish it was me on there?” she said, “Absolutely! I feel like I’d be killing it right now.”

Britney Holmes is talented, but admits that she is disappointed after making it to Hollywood and Idol’s top 50, but was cut before live voting from the audience began.

“It’s just, you know, like – dang!” she said. While it wasn’t always easy to watch, she did.

Few things surprised her about the way the season unfolded, but Holmes said she was disappointed when her personal favorite, Catie Turner, was let go. She said Turner brought originality and authenticity to the contest.

“My takeaway from this whole experience is to just be more vulnerable and to let people see the not-so-put-together you, the not-so-happy you, the not-so-strong you,” she said. “I think people enjoy seeing the not-made-up Britney, the Britney who is silly, the Britney who doesn’t always hit the right notes.”

American Idol did boost her social media following, which is a good thing for a vocal coach and singer/songwriter, but Holmes continues to look for additional opportunities to make music and share it with the world.

“You know, everyone has their own path and their own journey to follow and I truly believe everything happens for a reason,” she said. “I think my time will come when it is meant to be."
