8 free ways to commemorate Memorial Day in North Texas

To pay homage to our nation's fallen soldiers, there are plenty of free celebrations and ceremonies across North Texas for Memorial Day weekend. Here are just a few ways you can plan to spend your day off.

1. Dallas Memorial March

Date & Time: Sunday, May 27, 2018 -12:00 p.m. - Monday, May 28, 2018 - 3:30 p.m.

Location: Reverchon Park (3505 Maple Ave, Dallas, TX 75219)

Price: FREE

What: The 8th Annual Dallas Memorial March is a two-day Carry the Load event that honors our nation’s fallen heroes with speeches, music, stories of the fallen, flag ceremonies, and more. Celebrations begin on Sunday, and conclude at 3:00 p.m. on Memorial Day in observance of the National Moment of Remembrance.

2. Rowlett Memorial Day Event

Date & Time: Saturday, May 26, 2018 - 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Location: Rowlett Community Centre (5300 Main St, Rowlett, TX 75088)

Price: FREE

What: Join the City of Rowlett in honoring the brave men and women who devoted their lives to protecting our freedoms. The free celebration will include Touch-A-Truck, which allows children of all ages to touch, climb on and explore over 25 assorted trucks lined up throughout Rowlett Community Centre parking lot. The Memorial Day event will be held from 10:00 a.m -11:00 a.m. and the Touch-A-Truck event will be held from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

3. Flagpole Hill Memorial Day Concert + Fireworks Display

Date & Time: Monday, May 28, 2018 - 8:15 p.m.

Location: Flag Pole Hill Park (8015 Doran Cir, Dallas, TX 75201)

Price: FREE

What: In order to recognize and honor America’s veterans and first responders, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra will play a free concert of patriotic tunes. Citizens, friends and families are invited to pack a picnic and enjoy the evening of music and fireworks.

4. Granbury Memorial Day Salute

Date & Time: Saturday, May 26-28, 2018

Location: The Historic Granbury Square (205 E Pearl St, Granbury, TX 76048)

Price: FREE

What: The city of Granbury invites you to a three-day patriotic festival at the square, complete with family activities, market booths, live music, vintage military vehicles, a hot dog eating contest, a special children’s play area and more. The event will also include a Memorial Day Veteran’s ceremony on Monday hosted by the City of Granbury. More information on specific event times can be found on the Historic Granbury Square website.

5. Memorial Day Program at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery

Date & Time: Monday, May 28, 2018 - 11 a.m.

Location: Dallas- Fort Worth National Cemetery (2000 Mountain Creek Pkwy, Dallas, TX 75211)

Price: FREE

What: The Dallas- Fort Worth National Cemetery is hosting a Memorial Day ceremony to pay homage to our fallen soldiers. The ceremony will include remarks by Capt. Jonathan R. Townsend, Commander Naval Air Station Fort Worth, as well as performances by the Waxahachie High School Wind Ensemble and the Duncanville First Baptist Worship Ministries Choir. Other highlights include a rifle salute by soldiers from Fort Hood and a Missing Man formation flyover by the 301st Fighter Wing, 457th Fighter Squadron. 6. White Rock Lake Memorial Day Pop-up Barbecue

Date & Time: Saturday, May 26, 2018 - 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Location: White Rock Lake (White Rock Lake Stone Tables & Pavilion, 553-683 E. Lawther Drive, Dallas)

Price: FREE

What: For those already planning to spend the day with friends and family on the water, come on over to the White Rock Lake pavilion to enjoy a free barbecue, courtesy of One90 Smoked Meats, in honor of Memorial Day. The feast will include free entrees and sides such as potato salad and green beans. The event is first-come, first-served, so we recommend you get there early.

7. Grand Prairie Memorial Day Ceremony

Date & Time: Monday, May 28, 2018 - 9:30 a.m.

Location: Veterans Event Center (925 W. Conover Drive, Grand Prairie, TX 75050)

Price: FREE

What: Grand Prairie’s Memorial day ceremony will feature a fly over of AT-6 vintage airplanes, guest speaker Commissioned Officer Corps Commander Donna M. Johnson of the U.S. Navy, a flag retirement ceremony, and a 21-gun salute. A 53-pound brass bell will also be dedicated to honor all Veterans with a special commitment to Grand Prairie Veterans who lost their lives during active service. Free hotdogs and lemonade will be served by the Grand Prairie Rotary Clubs.

8. Memorial Day Flower Mound

Date & Time: Monday, May 28, 2018 - 9:00 a.m.

Location: Flower Mound Senior Center (2701 W Windsor Drive)

Price: FREE

What: Flower Mound invites you to join them in remembrance of our fallen soldiers. The ceremony will feature keynote speakers from the military and local leaders, Color Guard, patriotic music, and bagpipers. The Town is also asking residents to submit a picture and bio of a fallen hero which will be added to a special Wall of Honor and recognized during the event.
