A wheel like London? This project wants to add one to Dallas' skyline

A zoning request has been filed for a project that would bring a giant wheel to downtown Dallas' skyline.

DALLAS -- A zoning request has been filed for a project that would bring a giant wheel to downtown Dallas' skyline.

The Texas Odyssey is a proposed "observation wheel" that would stand at more than 500 feet on the banks of the Trinity River in the Cedars neighborhood of Dallas, a press release sent to WFAA on Friday said.

For context, the Texas Star Ferris Wheel in Fair Park is 212 feet tall, and the London Eye is 443 feet tall.

The release, sent by developer Eye of Texas, LLC, said the wheel would give riders a great view of the city during a 38-minute immersive voyage that would incorporate multimedia and multisensory aspects.

The seven-acre site will also feature pre and post-flight experiences, dining and retail, an outdoor performance center, and a STEAM education center, the release said.

The center will be open for use by Dallas ISD and nearby school districts for field trips "allowing students to have a closeup look at engineering of large scale moving objects such as the Texas Odyssey, and hands-on interactive experiences with renewable energy, urban green spaces, conservation and more," the release said.

The Texas Odyssey will also serve as a "gateway" to the Trinity River, giving better public access to the future Dallas Water Gardens and give visitors a way to experience the Trinity with paths to walk along the river.

“I’m excited for the residents of District 2 and everyone that will experience this year round attraction,” Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Adam Medrano said. “This will be a great compliment to the years of revitalization and investments in the Cedars Neighborhood. This project along with the upcoming high-speed rail station, which will open directly adjacent to the Texas Odyssey and the Dallas Water Gardens, will be

tremendous assets to the city of Dallas.”

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings said the project would be an amazing addition to Southern Dallas.

“This is sure to be very entertaining and it shows us all that GrowSouth is working," he said.
