It's the biggest danger officers face and it hits home again for Dallas police

A young Dallas police officer hit Sunday morning by a vehicle as he was putting down flares on I-20 suffered a head wound and broken bones, but his prognosis is good, sources told WFAA.

The DPD officer, a two-year veteran who has not been identified, was working another accident when he was struck.

"It's very dangerous right there. It's an open roadway and is a fast-moving part of Dallas,” said Mike Mata, President of the Dallas Police Association.

Police say the driver, 57-year-old Boniface Madubuko was approaching the accident and swerved around a squad car that had its lights on.

They say that's when he hit the Dallas officer.

"We need a lot of prayers from the public. He's doing better but far from being out of the woods,” said Mata.

The biggest threat to officers is not being shot but being struck while working car accidents, police say.

A couple weeks ago two officers and two firefighters were struck by an SUV. That crash was caught on dash camera.

The roads were slick when the driver lost control of her vehicle slamming into the first responders.

Officer Alex Lopez recalls how the accident sounded.

"The sound was like errrkkkkk. that's all I heard and got knocked back,” said Officer Lopez.

One of the firefighters was hospitalized with broken ribs.

State law requires that drivers either move over or go 20 miles below the posted speed limit when first responders are on the side of the road.

"Whenever they see those red and blues we need the public to realize they need to slow down,” said Mata.

The driver who hit the Dallas officer Sunday morning is now charged with aggravated assault against a public servant.

Meanwhile, the Dallas officers from the Southwest patrol division are keeping vigil at the hospital over their fellow officer.
