Strong storm system has eyes on North Texas this week

Highs will stay in the 40s & 50s - a bit of a change from our 70s last week!

BREAKING NEWS: Chief Meteorologist Pete Delkus changed his Twitter pic! Now you'll see Pete's tweets alongside a frosty photo. The cryptic message reads: "I just changed my profile picture. Care to guess why?!? And be careful. You may not be able to handle the answer!!" Let's explore what may have caused all the commotion!

Well, the commotion comes from our next strong storm system, which is currently swirling out in the Pacific Ocean. It has its eyes set on Texas later this week. Before then, below normal temperatures expected for this first week of December. Highs will stay in the 40s & 50s - a bit of a change from our 70s last week!

North Texas will start to notice our next weather maker late Wednesday as the clouds roll back in. By Thursday, scattered showers and storms develop. Rain coverage will increase Thursday night into Friday. Widespread rain engulfs North Texas throughout the day Friday. Prepare for on-and-off cold rain with temperatures in the 40s. Rain could be heavy at times causing localized flooding problems especially southeast of DFW.

Overnight, temperatures will need to be monitored closely. As another round of cold air spills in, temperatures will near freezing for areas northwest of DFW. If this scenario plays out, some of the cold rain could transition into a wintry mix overnight Friday into Saturday morning.

However, much uncertainty surrounds this possibility! Not all computer models are in agreement with the winter weather potential and none of them have winter weather in the DFW at this time. Remember, it takes more than just freezing temperatures at the surface to see a wintry mix or snow in North Texas.

You also need cold air to extend high up into the atmosphere so the wintry mix doesn't melt on the way down!

Either way, it warrants watching as we near the upcoming weekend. Though the "S-word" tends to grab headlines quickly, don't forget about the widespread cold rain North Texas will see Thursday through Saturday. We could pick up 1"-3" of rain during that time which is also something to talk about!
