Hundreds gather for 10th Annual Home for the Holidays Celebration

DALLAS — Hundreds of community members gathered at Janie C. Turner Recreation Center for the 10th Annual Home for the Holidays Celebration Saturday.

The holiday event was hosted by Dallas City Councilman Tennell Atkins, who represents District 8. Neighbors from across the community say they’ve made attending the celebration a tradition for their families.

Lashun Allison brought her family. She says they’ve returned to the event for seven years.

Allison explained, ”I mean, it just brings the whole community together.”

Volunteers transformed the gymnasium into a holiday banquet hall. Music from a band playing seasonal music filled the space, which was decorated with wreaths, poinsettias, trees, festive colors and a red carpet entrance. Santa and Mrs. Claus also greeted guests as they entered the luncheon.

“It’s all about giving back,” Councilman Atkins said.

About 15 groups partnered to put on the event. Members of the Arden Terrace Neighborhood Association sat together as they enjoyed entertainment and the program.

“Neighbors get to know neighbors,” Dean Johnson explained. “Different cultures come in. Different nationalities. It’s just a mixture of Dallas. You see Dallas.”

As families enjoyed a seasonal meal, neighbors made new friends. Some folks said this type of celebration reminded them of what is important heading into Christmas.

“It’s the reason for the season,” Allison explained. “To just give back as one, come together as a whole.”
