Wintry mix? It's possible – and it got us thinking about the snowstorms of DFW's past

Believe it or not, this past winter, DFW recorded a trace of snow in December, January, and February. However, you'd have to go back a few years to find more 'significant' snowfall.

North Texas, believe it or not…we’ve never had a winter with ZERO snow! Since record keeping began in 1898, Dallas-Fort Worth has always seen at least a TRACE of snow each winter season. So…there’s always a chance!

With the potential of a wintry mix and snow in North Texas later this week – and with Texas Department of Transportation crews already pre-treating DFW highways – it got us thinking about past winter weather events in North Texas.

Believe it or not, this past winter, DFW recorded a trace of snow in December, January, and February. However, you’d have to go back a few years to find more ‘significant’ snowfall.

Digging through our record books, one will quickly find several significant North Texas snow events over the past decade. Let’s take a stroll down memory lane. This may trigger memories of a winter wonderland…or of a winter nightmare.

Recent Significant Snow Events in North Texas:

February and March 2015 – Record snow recorded in February & March 2015. DFW recorded two inches of snow on Feb. 27, 2015, followed by 3.5 inches of snow between March 4-5, 2015.

December 2013 – COBBLESTONE ICE. Who could forget that dreaded term?! A combination of sleet, snow, and ice fell Dec. 5-6, 2013, causing major problems on the roads for several days after.

December 2012 – DFW recorded 0.4 inches of snow on Christmas Day!

February 2011 – The Super Bowl Snowstorm! Snow fell Feb. 3-4, 2011, affecting Super Bowl festivities in and around the DFW area. Dallas Love Field measured 5.1 inches of snow for the event. Upwards of 6 inches of snow was recorded in Collin County.

So, there you have it! North Texas does see snow – sometimes a trace and sometimes a blanket!

Climatologically speaking, DFW averages 0.3 inches of snow during the month of December. Our “snowiest” month is February. Annually, DFW averages 1.7 inches of snow.

So…you’re saying there’s a chance…
