Drivers urge caution around shifting lane patterns near I-35E South construction zone

Some drivers are sounding off about navigating new lane pattern changes.

DALLAS — The ongoing construction along Interstate 35E south of Downtown Dallas is part of a major project. Crews are working to widen the interstate as part of the Southern Gateway Project.

However, some commuters are saying shifting lane patterns are leading to accidents and too many close calls. “It’s too many curves,” Juanita Garza said.

Some drivers are sounding off about navigating new lane pattern changes. “Yeah, it’s dangerous,” said Charles Hill. ”It’s like you are trying to get over, and you are coming in, and if you get over too fast, they’ll hit you right in the back.”

Commuters are pointing out what they describe as problems on I-35 between Illinois Avenue and Highway 67. "A lot of people don’t realize its’ that many curves, so they keep going straight and then they cross over the lanes," Garza said.

WFAA-TV has submitted a request for crash data along this stretch of I-35. A spokesperson from Texas Department of Transportation said, “Slowing down, acknowledge it’s a construction zone, safety as a priority and driving to the conditions are paramount.”

Staff with the Southern Gateway Project say they have not received any complaints about the new lane patterns. They say teams are constantly driving the project and monitoring work zones and making adjustments, if needed.
