Local football recruits affected by Kliff Kingsbury leaving Texas Tech

Largely forgotten in the wake of Kliff Kingsbury's departure from Texas Tech...are the kids.

The Arizona Cardinals hired Kliff Kingsbury to be their next head coach.

The same Kliff Kingsbury who went 35-40 at Texas Tech, before he was fired in November.

Southern Cal hired Kingsbury to be the Trojans offensive coordinator, but that lasted a month because the Cardinals wanted him to be their head coach.

"I love Texas Tech," Kingsbury said at his Cardinals introductory press conference. "I loved my time there. Loved those players there, but this is a new chapter."

The Ryan Gosling doppelgänger has garnered plenty of attention lately, as he was essentially fired into a promotion.

Largely forgotten in the wake of Kingsbury's departure from Texas Tech...are the kids, from the current Red Raiders who chose Tech because of Kingsbury to the next class of recruits who committed for the same reason.

Many young players want to be the next Patrick Mahomes -- the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback (and NFL MVP candidate) who was coached by Kingsbury at Texas Tech.

Skyline High School quarterback-athlete Velton Gardner is one of those kids. Gardner committed to Tech two weeks before Kingsbury was fired. "I was shocked," Gardner told WFAA sports reporter Jonah Javad last week. "I was kind of devastated because I always wanted to play for him."

There are players across the region, the state and the country who have decommitted from schools or been forced to re-examine their options because of coaching changes in college football.

While some Tech recruits have since de-committed, Gardner has not. "I didn't decommit because I didn't feel the need to."

Gardner, who will play running back in college, is not 100 percent sold on Tech, though.

He's fielding interest from the likes of Houston and Kansas, and he smiled wide when recalled his conversation with Jayhawks new head coach Les Miles.

Gardner will announce his decision on National Signing Day on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at Skyline High School.
