A teenage student was arrested Tuesday morning for bringing a pistol into Mesquite Poteet High School, police confirmed to WFAA.
Police and Mesquite ISD said there were no active threats against the school and the student’s reason for bringing the gun to school was unclear.
Two other students “wasted no time” telling school officials the teen had a gun on campus, according to a statement from the school district that was also sent to parents. When the campus resource officer approached the student, the gun was in the student’s waistband, according to police.
“We are especially proud of our students who took quick action to ensure their safety and the safety of others,” Mesquite ISD’s statement read. “We believe this speaks to the positive relationships we have with our students and staff members who are committed to keeping our campus safe.”
Police said the teenager was taken into juvenile custody.
