The Irving company (NYSE: XOM) paid its median employee $171,375, compared to Phillips 66's $196,407.

Among 50 of the largest U.S. companies examined, other top industries for the highest pay include finance (companies including Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS), The Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE: GS), and Visa (NYSE: V)) and pharmaceuticals (companies including Gilead Sciences Inc. (Nasdaq: GILD), AbbVie Inc. (NYSE: ABBV), and Amgen Inc. (Nasdaq: AMGN).

So, where is the lowest median employee pay among the largest U.S. companies? Not surprisingly, it's at those that have large global workforces with employees in countries with lower wages than the United States (companies like McDonald's Corp. (NYSE: MCD), where the 2018 median employee pay was just $7,473).
