Major accident in Kaufman County causes another major accident on I-20

Multiple people are dead following two major crashes Friday afternoon in Kaufman County.

KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — A major crash at U.S. 80 and County Road 309 in Kaufman County that left one person dead and another person seriously injured resulted in another later crash along I-20 at County Road 130, authorities said.

DPS officials said troopers were dispatched at about 12:50 p.m. to the scene of the first crash.

Preliminary investigation found an 18-wheeler was traveling eastbound on U.S. 80 when a Ford Edge SUV traveling westbound onto the road turned in front of the 18-wheeler and collided into it, officials said.

There were two occupants in the Ford, officials said. One was pronounced dead at the scene and the other was taken to Baylor University Medical Center with serious injuries.

Following that crash, DPS says troopers were diverting traffic onto I-20.

At about 3:15 p.m. Highway Patrol troopers were called to I-20 near County Road 130, west of Terrell, where a semi-truck traveling westbound had stopped due to the previous crash. Due to the heavy traffic, that truck struck a pick-up truck hauling a trailer.

While these vehicles were stopped, a second truck-tractor collided into the first one.

Police said the driver of the second semi-truck was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation into both crashes is ongoing, officials said.
