Man dies after shooting involving Arlington police, department says

Police said the man called police at 6 a.m. on Sunday. Officers had surrounded the house when they say the man approached them with a firearm.

ARLINGTON, Texas — A man was pronounced dead on Sunday after a shooting that involved Arlington police early that morning, according to the police department.

Police posted a news release to social media on Sunday afternoon.

Officials said a man called 911 on Sunday morning and "indicated his desire to commit suicide by cop." After the call, at about 6 a.m., APD said officers were dispatched to a home in the 2500 block of Fallcreek Street.

According to Arlington police, the officers made a perimeter around the house and started talking to the man on a phone "in an attempt to de-escalate the situation." Police said the man eventually ended the phone call and started approaching them while carrying a firearm.

Police said they shot at the man after telling him to put the firearm down.

"Officers instructed the man to put down the weapon, but he did not comply. Based on the man’s actions, multiple officers fired their service weapons, striking the man," police said in the news release.

After the shooting, police said officers performed life-saving measures on the man until paramedics arrived. The man was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Patricio Corban Gamboa, 23, was identified as the man who died, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office.

No one else was injured, police said.

Arlington police say there are now two investigations taking place for this incident: A criminal investigation to review the incident, and an administrative investigation to determine whether officers in this incident followed department policies and procedures.

In a news release, the department said it will follow its policy and place the involved officers on paid administrative leave during the investigation.

No other information is available at this time.
