COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Following initial reports from multiple outlets late Saturday night that Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops would be taking up the Texas A&M head coaching job in 2024, new information has come to light stating that Stoops will be staying with the Wildcats and not taking up the vacant head coaching position in College Station.
The news was first reported by Matt Jones of KentuckySportsRadio, and later confirmed by multiple outlets, including ESPN, The Athletic, and TexAgs co-owner Billy Liucci.
As of Saturday night, no official word from Texas A&M has come out about who would be the next head coach for the program beginning in 2024.
Early morning on Sunday, Stoops even took to X, formerly Twitter, to clear the air about the speculation of him leaving Kentucky. The Wildcats had a major win on Saturday, defeating in-state rival and ninth ranked Louisville 38-31 on the road.
With the Stoops news and rumors subsided, other candidates that have been speculated as still in the running include current Duke head coach and former Texas A&M defensive coordinator Mike Elko, Arizona head coach Jedd Fisch, and interim head coach Elijah Robinson.
With the new information in mind, no indicators of where the Aggies would be playing for their postseason bowl game have been revealed as of publish time. A&M recently fell to LSU in Baton Rouge in the final game of the regular season, continuing the Aggies' 10-loss streak on the road.
