Reports: Mike Elko to be selected as Texas A&M head coach for 2024

A familiar face around the A&M program will return for the 2024 season.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Following a tumultuous Saturday evening of rumors surrounding who would lead Texas A&M as their head coach in 2024, multiple reports have surfaced naming Duke head coach Mike Elko as the next candidate to lead the Aggies following the conclusion of the 2023 season.

Ever since the news broke that A&M had parted ways with Jimbo Fisher, Elko has been a prospective candidate to fill the vacancy, having previously coached with the Aggies from 2018 to 2021.

After Elko accepted the head coaching job at Duke, he was able to elevate the Blue Devils to new heights within the ACC. He was even named ACC Coach of the Year in his first year with Duke in 2022 following a 9-4 season, which included a win in the Military Bowl against UCF, and was a stark contrast to the 2-9 and 3-9 records the Blue Devils had in the 2020 and 2021 seasons respectively.

According to TexAgs co-owner Billy Liucci, a decision on whether or not to confirm Elko was made Saturday night, with further conversations taking place on Sunday.

Similarly to Texas A&M, Duke sits at 7-5 on the season and has clinched a postseason bowl appearance. Additionally, no indicators of where the Aggies or the Blue Devils would be playing for their postseason bowl game have been revealed as of publish time.
