BALCH SPRINGS, Texas — Balch Springs Emergency Management opened a temporary shelter at Balch Springs Senior Center after they say a hoverboard sparked a fire at an apartment complex and displaced 82 residents.
Balch Springs Fire responded to the blaze at the apartment complex in the 4300 block of Shepherd Lane shortly before 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, and 20 units were damaged. Dallas Fire-Rescue, Dallas County Fire, and Mesquite Fire also responded.
In addition to the temporary shelter at the Balch Springs Senior Center, the American Red Cross and Sharing Life Community Outreach are working to provide support services for displaced residents.
“We stand in solidarity with the affected residents and their families during this challenging time,” said Balch Springs Fire Chief Eric Neal. “Our priority remains the well-being of our community, and we will continue to work tirelessly to provide support and assistance to those impacted by this unfortunate incident.”
An investigation determined the fire was caused by an electric hoverboard, officials say.
