RICHARDSON, Texas — A patient who barricaded himself inside a Richardson hospital room Sunday is in police custody.
In a social media post, Richardson police say staff at Methodist Richardson Medical Center called authorities to help with an uncooperative patient "experiencing a mental health crisis."
Dozens of officers responded, including some wearing tactical gear and carrying long guns. Authorities also deployed a drone and a remote-controlled robot.
At about 5:30 p.m., a WFAA crew heard four loud noises resembling the sound a flashbang would make. Police did not confirm whether they used such a device, but they began to pack up their things shortly after.
Richardson police say no one was hurt during the incident, which last more than three hours. It's not clear whether the patient will be charged with a crime.
The Methodist Richardson Medical Center campus has a behavioral health unit, meaning nurses and doctors there are prepared to handle most patients experiencing a mental health crisis. It's not clear what ailment or condition doctors were treating the uncooperative patient for Sunday.
The campus emergency room, which only accepts walk-in patients, did not close during the police response. Normal operations continued Sunday night, though a few police officers remained on scene.
