Family seeks answers after pregnant woman dies and baby survives in January crash involving an off-duty Dallas Police officer

“It’s like we’re living in hell all over again. Every time I hear it, it’s like hearing it for the first time all over again," said Quincy Kennedy, Aquazia's father.

DALLAS — The first lesson baby Sky’Lynn learned is to fight. “We’re witnessing her fight for her life,” said Quincy Kennedy, Aquazia Kennedy’s father.

Fight is a lesson Sky’Lynn’s mother, 19-year-old Aquazia Kennedy unknowingly passed down to her. The day Sky’Lynn was born was the day her mother died

“It’s like she transferred. I believe she’s there with her right now,” said Quincy Kennedy.

On January 6, Dallas County Sheriff’s said they responded to a major accident in which a Jeep Wrangler crashed into a stalled vehicle in the center lane of I-30 and 2nd Avenue. Aquazia Kennedy, who was pregnant, was in the backseat. Her brother and his brother were in the front.

“They saw this vehicle coming,” said Quincy Kennedy. “She jumped up in the chair and hovered her baby. She covered her baby and she clutched her brother’s arm as if she was saying goodbye and…it happened. Her life was gone just like that.”

The brothers survived with at least one suffering injuries. Deputies say the off-duty officer was released from the hospital.

Scheduled to be born in February, doctors delivered Sky’Lynn early. For the first time, the fighter opened her eyes on Monday.

“Sky’lyn is going to want to know why her mom is not here and what did we do to help,” said Quincy Kennedy.

The family has hired Attorney Daryl Washington, Washington Law Firm, P.C.

“We want answers. We want to know what’s going on with this police officer,” said Washington. “You would think the very first person that they would want to talk to are the survivors of the accident. That hasn’t happened.”

We reached out to the Sheriff’s Office. They said, “No charges are being filed. It was a tragic accident. No charges being filed on Dallas officer.”

WFAA sources said the stalled vehicle did not have on lights, but Washington said he has a witness, Lavada Hunter, who said otherwise.

“I saw the hazard lights from far off,” said Hunter, a witness. Hunter said she was driving home from work when she saw the crash.

“I grabbed her hand and I held onto her hand. I was trying to check on the brother too because he was in the passenger seat and wasn’t moving,” said Hunter. “I know there was a good five to seven minutes that I was there alone.”

Washington said there are still questions regarding the off-duty officer.

“We know that he was checked on at the hospital and was released,” said Washington. “Those are the questions we have to get answers to. Why didn’t he make himself available?”

The family created a GoFundMe to help with funeral costs and baby supplies.

“It’s hitting us all so hard,” said Davida Kennedy, Aquazia Kennedy’s close aunt. “Aquazia was excited. She was ready to start a new life.”

It's a new life that began with resilience and with a fight that carries onto others.

“Sky’Lynn has given me that fight that Aquazia gave her,” said Quincy Kennedy.
