DENTON COUNTY, Texas — First responders in Denton County say they rescued a cow that had fallen through an iced-over pond in Copper Canyon this week.
"My wife called me and said we’ve got a cow in the pond, come home," Kelly Davis, who owns the cow told WFAA.
His 18-month-old cow, Junie B, fell into his freezing frozen pond Wednesday afternoon.
"They become your pets!" he said.
"You feed them every day, you watch over them, so it’s kind of like a family member in the pond."
His wife jumped in to try to save Junie B but could not get her out.
So, Davis called for backup. Denton County Emergency Services District 1 responded, where firefighters had been prepping to respond to burst pipes, not stranded cows.
"We really put some effort into this," firefighter Mon Ngyen said.
The crew used straps and a tractor borrowed from Copper Canyon town council member Chase Lybbert to bring the cow out of the pond, then warmed her up with blankets, according to Denton County Emergency Services.
"We took some horse blankets and covered her, we were kind of hugging around her, Ngyen said.
"To see the close-knit community, everybody coming together, it’s a great story,"" Fire Chief Ricky Vaughn said.
Officials say the appreciative cow got up to follow firefighters as they left the scene.
