Cumby Collegiate High School was evacuated Tuesday after odor was detected, the district says

Staff and students were allowed to return to the district around 3 p.m. Tuesday, according to Cumby Collegiate ISD.

CUMBY, Texas — Cumby Collegiate High School students and staff were evacuated to the gym Tuesday while the Hopkins County Fire Department, Cumby Fire Department, and Atmos Energy investigated the buildings after an odor was detected, the district says. Cumby is about 75 miles northeast of Dallas.

“An odor was detected and identified. Staff and students were sent to the gym to allow the buildings to be investigated by Hopkins County Fire, Cumby Fire, and Atmos Energy. All staff and students were allowed to return to the buildings. Games will be played tonight,” Cumby Collegiate ISD shared in an update on its website around 3 p.m. Tuesday.

When asked about the source of the odor, Cumby Collegiate ISD superintendent Shelly Slaughter told WFAA “A new cleaning solution that was used.”

The evacuation affected grades 3-12, the district previously said.
