I-30 in Fort Worth reopened after wrong way crash Thursday morning, police say

The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. on I-30 near Lockheed Boulevard.

FORT WORTH, Texas — A deadly wrong-way crash on Interstate 30 in west Fort Worth shut down the eastbound lanes of the highway Thursday morning, police said.

The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. on I-30 near Lockheed Boulevard. Police shut down the highway at the Alta Mere Drive, and traffic was already getting backed up for several miles during the morning commute.

Just before 3 p.m., Forth Worth police posted an update saying all lanes of traffic were open after the freeway was shut down for nearly 13 hours.

Police said officers had responded to a report of a wrong-way driver at 2:32 a.m. When they arrived, they found one victim dead. Three others were reported injured, according to MedStar. Police said Thursday they did not have information on other people injured.

Police said a Dodge Caravan traveling west in the eastbound lanes hit an 18-wheeler headed east in the Dallas direction. Investigators kept the road closed for hours as they worked to determine what went wrong.

"If intoxication or anything else was involved in that we will find out," Officer Tracy Carter with Fort Worth Police said. He said crashes involving semi-trucks are particularly dangerous. "Just know that they’re a lot bigger than you are and their reaction time is a lot slower.

More information about how the crash happened was not yet released.

Earlier Thursday morning, another wrong-way crash in far north Fort Worth killed one person, police said.

That first crash happened around 12:40 a.m. along Texas 114 near Farm Road 156 in the area near Northwest High School, according to a news release from Fort Worth police.

Officers responded and found two vehicles involved in the crash. One of the vehicles was going in the wrong direction on 114 and crashed head-on into the other vehicle, police said. The person who was driving the wrong-way vehicle died at the scene, according to the release.

The other driver was evaluated at the scene and released. More information about how the crash happened was not yet available Thursday morning. Traffic detectives were still investigating the crash.
