DALLAS — January is National Blood Donation Month.
The need for blood is urgent as the American Red Cross declared a critical blood shortage nationwide earlier this month. The nonprofit cited several factors that have contributed to the decline in blood donors, including an increase in respiratory illnesses and changes in blood transfusion protocols at hospitals.
The American Red Cross said that snow, ice and extreme temperatures have made it tougher to move vital blood products across the Red Cross network, affecting deliveries to hospitals in some locations.
As much of the country warms up this week, the Red Cross is urging people to make an appointment to give blood or platelets by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
