1 dead, 5 injured after car crashes into St. David's North Austin Medical Center

There are no indications that the crash was an intentional act, officials said.

AUSTIN, Texas — UPDATE: Austin police released new details on Feb. 14 about the hospital crash. The original story continues below.

St. David's North Austin Medical Center has reopened Wednesday morning after a vehicle drove into the emergency room at approximately 5:38 p.m. Tuesday evening.

One person has been declared dead and five others are injured, including two children.

Now, a construction crew has worked to board up the damage and the hospital is welcoming walk-ins as per usual.

Austin-Travis County EMS said the driver, who was treated by hospital staff, was pronounced dead on the scene. Four other people were transported to different hospitals, while another was treated on-site at St. David's North.

In an update on Tuesday night, ATCEMS confirmed two children and one adult were taken to Dell Children's Medical Center. One of the children had critical injuries, while the other child and the adult had non-life-threatening injuries. A second adult was taken to Round Rock Medical Center with critical injuries.

Dr. Peter DeYoung with the hospital said St. David's North also has eight patients who were already being cared for at the ER that will need to be transferred to other hospitals because of the crash.

Austin police believe the incident appears to be an accident, with a motorist driving into the ER. There are no indications that the crash was an intentional act, a top city official told KVUE's Tony Plohetski preliminarily.

The building is in "good condition" after the crash, Dr. DeYoung said, and there will be no impact to the department. The hospital will not be accepting ambulances as it works to set up an alternate entrance.

The Austin Fire Department hazmat task force responded to the scene, as well as ATCEMS and the Austin Police Department. ATCEMS had eight ambulances, four commanders, a designated medical officer, three medical directors, two PAs, three community health paramedics, two division chiefs and a PIO on the scene.

APD said there is no threat to the public. The public has been asked to avoid the area.

Gov. Greg Abbott pledged the state's support in a statement on social media on Tuesday night:

"I’ve spoken with Mayor Watson about the tragic accident at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center & offered Texas’ full support. State personnel are working closely with local officials to ensure Austin has no unmet needs. Cecilia & I pray for the victims & their loved ones," the governor said.

No other details are available at this time.
